The most remarkable thing about the movie is the portrayal of the relationships between the three siblings. The viewer becomes convinced that the two actresses really are sisters. And yes, it doesn't feature any 'masala,' or 'lip-syncing' or 'dance numbers -- and it's a better film for these omissions. The parents were the center of the story. The pairing of Saeed with Khan resulted in hype over the drama aired and it proved a major commercial success. Time seems to stand still and the scene unfolds like a Gothic play, albeit one that moves from set to set with the help of a gliding camera.
Everything about it, from the brief moments between the siblings, to the romance between Beo Rana and Mohammad Ahmed, is very realistic. The ambiguity of the film, helped predominantly by its vague title, is purposefully done by Abbasi. Just watched the movie in hoyts cinema, Melbourne, Victoria. Last Friday, I entered the cinema with high expectations, and it would not be an exaggeration to say that not only did Cake meet them, it surpassed them. Shedding our national obsession with larka and shaadi is what makes the female leads in Cake revolutionary, not their so-called strength, which in any case is a word emptied of meaning through careless overuse. Her rant is interrupted when Claire notices their car has been stolen, forcing them to stay in a motel and get a rental car to return to Los Angeles. We find ourselves stunned by the lengths that parents will go to protect their children and the undeniable rifts between class and religious minorities. Adnan Sarwar is a trained doctor who started his career as a guitarist for various local musicians. There are many scenes performed by Mohammed Ahmed which will bring a tear to the eye.
