It's has been treating me nicely since the day it arrived, but it had its drawbacks as well The shift button is too far on the bottom for my liking. Each of the eight strips represents a chord, allowing for perfect scale progressions with inspiring results. In the Jam, a row has no special significance; each column is a list of pattern variations, and a Scene simply recalls one pattern from each Group. As far as applications, it works fine with Maschine, and with Ableton Live; although there is a whole sequence of file copying and setup to do; so it is not working out of the box. The cursor can be conveniently switched on the program menu and in most cases allows to do it without a mouse. It is just a matter of getting used to it, I assume. Using Maschine's browser with Jam is nowhere near as fluid without the built-in screens. Using the pads, you can quickly configure the required chord sounds for each of the strips.
With its colorful, vibrant and dynamically variable illumination, the pads nicely display used patterns and elements in a project. My big question for the Jam was whether it offered something compelling on top of what Maschine can already do. Coupled with the capabilities of the touchstrips, it totally reinvigorates the experience of performing or recording extended pieces. In fact, it allows you to have on the different parts of the track eight different interesting effects, controlled at the same time! The bottom buttons A-H are used to select an appropriate group for global management of an entire group at once or edit sounds within it. Maschine's arranger has long been one of its weaker elements, but Jam's pads now allow Patterns and Scenes to be triggered in a manner similar to Ableton Live's clip launcher. The Jam is easy to learn and easy to add to your current system. What the Jam does very well is focus on a few key areas and give them much more room to breathe. The Jam can also be used on its own, and with a street price just a touch above the Mikro it is one of the most affordable ways into the world of Maschine. It has unique features and it is inexpensive. The software is a little clunky and requires a computer to hook all of your devices to. Downsides aside, there's a lot that Maschine Jam does remarkably well.
Really satisfied with this and can't wait to purchases the studio! I chose the Maschine Jam for its solid integration with Ableton with the use of an advanced template specific to Ableton Live, and access to the Maschine software, instruments and sounds. Multi-segment display, provided next to each strip, helps in the workflow. In fact, it allows you to have different eight various interesting effects on different parties of a track controlled at the same time! Included within the Maschine library are the Drum Synth plug-ins, which include Kick, Snare, Hi-Hats, Toms, Percussion, and Cymbal. Four new function buttons above the 16 pads let you quickly select pad performance modes. It's very easy to get started and load patterns, duplicate, undo and redo, etc. Unlimited in software, 64 accesible from hardware. In Guitar mode, you can strum the Smart Strips from bottom to top to play any six notes you choose.
Control and Macro modes allow additional forms of interaction with effects and other parameters. Moving around tracks, groups and sounds, using the knob and the 4 directional buttons is easy and intuitive. While I love this product on its own, it really shines only when paired with the or the Do I Recommend the? There are a few other functions that suffer from the lack of screens too. It also does away with the built-in screens, the functionality of which is replaced by a number of pop-up windows that appear on the computer screen in response to button presses on the hardware. Nothing too hard, but takes you some time to figure out where to place files and how to set up config parameters in the options, and you just need to do it once. This was a welcome surprise! The controller case is made of plastic. Plus the aforementioned Notes button turns the Smart Strips into an instrument for playing single notes or full chords.
Each lends a hand to a seamless creative process between hardware and software. The Specs: The Maschine Jam is laid out with simple, striking, easy-to- push buttons. In this mode, the most remarkable is that you can control eight tracks at the same time. Some of the features are not implemented, like browsing or transport features; while other works. A Kensington lock port can be used to secure the box, and a stand is included to raise the unit up for live performance. It is very important that the controller is not a replacement for the previous models. Lastly, Jam hugely improves arranging and performing with Maschine.
If inspiration fails you, the Randomizer lets you try out auto-generated sequences. Deus Ex Maschine Approaching Jam as an existing Maschine user can initially be a little confusing. The lower right-hand quarter of the grid area has 16 numbered pads and these can be used to select sounds or instruments within a project. However, the Jam does have an extra trick that only Push can match: step sequencing. Producers who want an all-in-one system, including ultra-sensitive pads, 2 color screens; plus the benefit of recording and sampling without the need of an extra soundcard.
Next to it is a touch-sensitive rotary encoder that opens various browsers: instance of Maschine, project, effect, chord and so on. You can assign one effect to each of the channels and conveniently control its key parameter using touch faders. Finally, the top row of numbered buttons are Scenes. The bottom-right 16 buttons become a miniature pad grid where you can select sounds from the Group. So, Scene by Scene arrangement works well, and you can create a one-off improvised performance from the grid if you stay inside single Scenes.
Amazingly, the strips also let you input notes, dragging up and down instead of using the pads. I did buy this not because I use Maschine app, but to have a more well-rounded controller that can help me to use the keyboard and mouse to the minimum. Only a few plug-ins I tried had occasional parameter slots that were empty. It is a weird concept if you are used to classic instruments and you did study music theory, but for everyone else, it is easy, and you may end up making something that sound nice, even without even knowing what are you doing. It makes creating, sequencing, and jamming real time easy and fun.
